semiotics

Semiotics: icon, index, symbol notes

An Icon has a physical resemblance to the signified, the thing being represented. A photograph is a good example as it certainly resembles whatever it depicts.

An Index shows evidence of what’s being represented. A good example is using an image of smoke to indicate fire.

A Symbol has no resemblance between the signifier and the signified. The connection between them must be culturally learned. Numbers and alphabets are good examples.

Why are icons and indexes so important in media texts?

icons and indexes are important in media texts because they let the audience understand what a picture means such as if there was a poster about computers, the audience would want to know the company and they wouldn't understand what the poster represents however if there was a microsoft icon at the left, bottom, right, wherever, they would understand that its a poster/advertisement from microsoft. To sum it up, Icons give the audience context. Indexes are important because they give the audience an understanding of what's the genre/semantic field, if there was a footprint of a cat's paw on the ground, it makes you instantly think that a cat's around, so in media text, if there's picture of the russian communist flag, it would make you think the media text is about communism. They both help the audience understand. It also helps foreigners understand.

Why might global brands try and avoid symbols in their advertising and marketing?

Global brands would try and avoid symbols in their advertising and marketing because they would want to stay original and different, also they could cause conflictions such as the nazi symbol would not be the best idea for a company because majority of the people hate nazis and it would cause a backlash on their company even if it was an accident (hypothetically speaking). Global brands would want their audience to not get any crazy idea of what their brand means.

Find an example of a media text (e.g. advert) where the producer has accidentally communicated the wrong meaning using icons, indexes or symbols. Why did the media product fail?

BBC uses a icon from a game instead of the icon of the United Nations.

Find an example of a media text (e.g. advert) that successfully uses icons or indexes to create a message that can be easily understood across the world.
